On the road: Manipur diaries

Mervin Joseph, our Enterprise and Business Development Manager is also our resident expert on all crafts from the north-east. He recently represented Industree Foundation at the Kaushal Vikas and Job Mela organised by National Skill Development Corporation in Imphal, Manipur on December 2nd. During his week’s travel around Manipur, he also met with handloom and kauna mat weavers.

NSDC, in association with Skill India, had also organised a competition for the local weavers at the launch of the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) Program.

Mervin also visited Odesh, an NGO that works with kauna phak (mat) weavers in Thoubal district, Manipur. The stem of the kauna, a local reed that grows in marshes and stagnant water, can be used to weave a uniquely textured mat with neatly detailed edges.
